  • Strategy: Citizenship by investment
  • Client: African business owner based in the Middle East
  • Requirement: European residency and future citizenship options

Enness was approached by a successful African business owner who had been based in the Middle East for the previous ten years. The client had founded and operated several businesses and was looking to expand their interests further into Europe.

As part of their longer-term plans, the client wanted to purchase a property in Europe and spend more time on the continent. They were therefore interested in understanding the different options available to them for establishing a stronger connection to Europe while continuing to manage their existing international business interests.

The client also had a personal motivation for exploring alternative citizenship options. Having experienced the limitations associated with their nationality of birth, they wanted to consider whether there was an opportunity to provide their future children with greater flexibility when travelling, living and pursuing opportunities internationally.

During our discussions, Enness explored a range of citizenship by investment options with the client. We considered factors including the available programmes, potential investment requirements, processing times and the wider benefits associated with each option.

Given the client’s international profile and long-term objectives, it was important to consider the citizenship solution alongside their wider plans rather than treating it as an isolated decision. Their European business interests, proposed property purchase and desire for greater flexibility for their future family all formed part of the overall assessment.

After reviewing the available options, Enness identified a citizenship route that was considered the most suitable for the client’s circumstances and objectives. The client was therefore able to move forward with a clearer understanding of the available opportunities and how citizenship could fit within their broader international plans.

This case demonstrates how citizenship planning can form part of a wider international wealth and lifestyle strategy for high-net-worth individuals. The most appropriate route will depend on factors including nationality, residence, investment objectives, family circumstances and the requirements of the relevant jurisdiction.

Enness works with specialist partners to help international clients explore citizenship and wider wealth structuring opportunities. If you are considering your options for international mobility or citizenship, speak to a mortgage specialist to discuss your circumstances.

Property values can fall as well as rise, and you may not get back the amount originally invested. Property investments can be illiquid and may take time to sell. Where borrowing is used, your property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or other loan secured against it.
